In the Catcher in the Rye Holden goes through a series of emotions mainly depression caused by Allie, his brother's death. Allie died from leukemia at the age of 11 and things just went left from then on. His parents doesn't really pay him any attention, they move him from school to school across the country and barely even checks on him. Not only that but Holden has self esteem issues where he sees himself the dumb one in his family as well fails all his classes in school. Reasons to believe Holden goes through depression is he drinks and smoke. During this time he was only 16 years old and you can't do either of those things at a young age. Not only that, he also have a tough time not being able to eat and force puking some times. Troubled sleeping, gives up on doing anything in his life, have suicidal thoughts and even admits to feeling depressed. This just brings me to this ted talk because in the the talk talk, Kevin Breel explains in his life he felt like he was live in two different lives where one life everyone sees and the other life only himself sees. This relates to Holden because he seemed to act differently in front of people as oppose to the way he acts around himself. A lot of people that knew Holden probably didn't know Holden was having suicidal thoughts or didn't eat or sleep enough, but I thinks he covers up his depression with lies and isolates his self from people to avoid dealing with his emotions.
